The Chinese government warned today that it would take “tough measures” if US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan, following a report in the Financial Times newspaper that the US official will next month visit the island that China considers its own territory.
Pelosi and her delegation will also visit Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore and spend time in Hawaii at the headquarters of the US Indo-Pacific Command, according to the report. Pelosi’s office and the US State Department did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Taiwan’s foreign ministry said it had “received no relevant information” about any visit.

Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said a visit by Pelosi “would seriously undermine China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
“If the US side stubbornly sticks to this course, China will definitely take decisive and strong measures to vigorously defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said. “The US must bear full responsibility for all the consequences that will be caused by this.”
