This afternoon a fire broke out in one of Birmingham’s favorite scenic spots as the scorching heat continued to rise.

Witnesses living near Lickey Hills Country Park said the fire was “catastrophic” and “extremely frightening” as the fire brigade’s main response began.

Elliott Weaver captured an image showing thick smoke erupting as a result of a flame, believed to cover approximately 4,305 square feet of land in Red Null.

Fog covered the sky and flames were visible in the distant brush.

Firefighters are trying to control the fire near the golf course.

Elliott tells us:

I probably live about 150 meters from the bottom of Red Null Hill and it’s still hot here, but it was scorching hot when I woke up.

The air was really dry and full of smoke and ash, and you could see the firefighters trying to do everything in the smoke.

“It was too scary. I kept my distance for obvious reasons. I go there regularly, like many of us, it’s full of wildlife and trees, and it’s so peaceful to get away from the city. It’s a nice place.”

“It’s very sad to see it burn and turn to ashes.”

“This is a first and really devastating as I’ve never had an explosion like this near Leaky.”

A post on the county park’s Facebook page suggests the fire was caused by a one-off barbecue. There is still no official confirmation of the cause of the fire. This is due to the expected temperature of 40 degrees Celsius, which is a UK record.

Smoke has been seen for miles, and white ash is pouring into people’s homes. The fire department asked nearby residents to close doors and windows and advised people to stay away from the area.

Elliott, 34, who works in film and television, recounts:

“The last time I was there, it looked like it would be a while before they got it under control, so maybe the fire is heading in the opposite direction.” But at least it is relaxing in this direction.

The fire is devastating to the community (Image: PA)

There are some houses that have returned to Red Null Hill, but there are no reports of evacuations. There was a house next door where I took a photo, and it looks like firefighters were swimming to evacuate people and protect their property.

Elliott has obtained temperature measurements showing 48°C mercury near the park, a rich and diverse green oasis covering 524 hectares southwest of Birmingham.

According to the weather, the current temperature in the city is 36 degrees Celsius.

Elliott added: “The community here feels like a country park, and I’ve never seen anything this bad here before the fire broke out.

“We are grateful to the firefighters for what they are doing.

The Herefordshire and Worcester Fire Departments said: “The HWFRS crew and West Midlands Fire Rescue team are currently working on an open fire in the Rose Hill area of Rednal in the Leaky Hills.

“People are asked to stay away from the area. Residents are asked to close doors and windows.”
