London, Thanasis Gavos
At 4 pm London time the names will be announced two would-be successors to Boris Johnson which will qualify from the latter vote of Conservative MPs.
The vote takes place between 1pm and 3pm, with MPs being asked to choose between former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, former Defense Secretary Penny Mordant and current Secretary of State Liz Truss.
Mr. Sunak came out on top in Tuesday’s vote with 115 votes, Ms. Mordant second with 92 and Ms. Truss third with 86. Kemi Beidenock was eliminated with 59 votes, which the remaining three are contesting today.
Although it is believed that most of Ms Beidenock’s votes come from the right wing of the party and would therefore logically go to Ms Truss who represents the same wing, the predictions are complicated by the assessment that in yesterday’s vote Mr Sunak “lent” votes to Liz Truss. The purpose of such a tactical move by the 42-year-old politician is believed to be to exclude Kemi Beidenock, who was by far the most popular candidate among party members, according to the latest opinion polls.
The final couple will participate in the selection process, by postal vote, by members of the Conservative Party in the summer. The winner and next Prime Minister will be announced on September 5.
After Tuesday’s vote the bookmakers’ predictions have Liz Truss as favorite for the premiership, closely followed by Rishi Sunak, with Penny Mordant losing ground.
