Lula coordinates meeting with BRICS ambassadors

by

Former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) placed first in the polls of intention to vote for the Planalto, is preparing for next week a meeting with ambassadors from the countries that make up the BRICS, a bloc formed by Russia, India, China and Africa. of the South, in addition to Brazil.

The agenda was set before the meeting of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) with ambassadors, on Monday, when he propagated lies and called into question the reliability of electronic voting machines. The expectation is that Lula, later, will also meet with diplomats from other countries, in groups or individually.

The revelation that he should meet with ambassadors was made by the former president himself in a meeting with members of the MDB. According to parliamentarians present, Lula released the information after criticizing Bolsonaro for the event with the heads of foreign missions at Palácio da Alvorada.

According to reports, the PT said at the time that the president held a meeting that symbolizes the willingness of the Chief Executive to question the outcome of the October election if he is defeated. To the emedebistas, Lula also commented that, if there had been fraud at the polls, he would never have been elected.

According to members of his campaign, Lula has been sought out by diplomats from other countries, either alone or together. The perspective of allies is that the debate on the election and the reliability of the polls permeates the meetings, even if it should not be the main topic.

For PT members close to Lula, this meeting will also serve to discuss topics such as climate, hunger, inequality and peace in the world. Thus, the meeting, in the assessment of allies, should repeat the script of a series of international trips that the former president made in 2021 — he traveled to Germany and France.

In Paris, Lula was received with honors to discuss “fundamental global issues”, according to the French government. Earlier this year, the PT met in São Paulo with the president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, which led Bolsonaro to cancel the meeting he would have with the European leader.

Lula’s meetings are expected to take place amid the repercussions of Bolsonaro’s meeting with foreign diplomats. In the second, at Palácio da Alvorada, the Brazilian leader recycled lies and made attacks on STF (Federal Supreme Court) ministers Edson Fachin, Luís Roberto Barroso and Alexandre de Moraes.

A list of participants has not been released. In total, about 60 representatives of diplomatic missions were at Alvorada. as showed the Sheet, Ambassadors present at the meeting assessed that Bolsonaro adopted a tactic similar to that of Donald Trump in the United States: paving the way for questioning the outcome of the elections.

Defeated by Joe Biden, the Republican fueled conspiracy theories according to which the election was rigged and was the centerpiece of the episode that resulted in the invasion of the US Congress on January 6th.

According to the diplomats interviewed, Bolsonaro’s statements should not change the opinion of the missions based in Brasilia, since the content presented in Alvorada differed little from previous attacks against the TSE. For the ambassadors, the president, with the event, tried to divert the focus from problems that affect his government, such as inflation and fuel prices.
