The Japanese prime minister has ordered authorities to take life-saving measures following a volcano eruption on a major western island of Kyushu.

The evacuation is progressing and the domestic eruption alert level has been raised to 5.

According to public broadcaster NHK, the rock erupted from the Sakurajima volcano and fell 2.5 km (1.5 miles) to earth.

The volcanoes are one of the most active volcanoes in Japan, with varying levels of eruptions occurring regularly. In 2019, it ejected 5.5 km (3.4 mi) of ash.

Images of today’s eruption looked like a red mass flowing down the side of the volcano, indicating that the red plume was spewing smoke into the night sky.

Deputy Secretary-General Isozaki said: “We will put human life first, understand the situation and do our best to respond to emergencies.”

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the eruption occurred around 8:05 pm (12:05 pm UK time).

Authorities warned that volcanic rocks could fall within 3 km (1.2 mi) of the crater, causing lava and ash flows and gas leaks within 2 km (1.2 mi).

There were no immediate reports of damage and two hours after the eruption, government officials said they had never heard of any damage.

Most of the city of Kagoshima is beyond the volcanic bay, but some residential areas are about 3 km (1.9 miles) from the crater, and NHK says it could be evacuated.
