Major General Hallahan, 44, has been the head of special forces in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions since August 2020.

The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyreplaced a top officer of his army in the eastern part of the country, after the heavy losses of territory occupied by Russian forces.

By his decree, the head of state deposed him Hrichory Hallahan and appointed him to his place Viktor Horenko.

Major General Hallahan, 44, has been the head of special forces in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions since August 2020.

Following Russia’s invasion on February 24, Ukraine completely lost control of Lugansk Oblast.

About 50% of the neighboring Donetsk region has been occupied by the Russian army. Before the invasion, 30% of the region’s territory was controlled by pro-Russian separatists.

Recently Mr. Zelensky acknowledged that Kyiv has lost control of 20% of Ukrainian territory.

The general staff in Kyiv also acknowledged that yesterday Russian units scored successes at the Burlehirsk lignite power station in Donetsk, which they had besieged for several days.

Ukrainian officials assured, however, that attacks in the direction of the cities of Bakhmut and Shiversk were repelled.
