Jared Kushner, top adviser and son-in-law of the former US president Donald Trumpreveals in a book of his memoirs to be published next month that he had thyroid cancer in 2019, a fact that remained unknown until now.
In excerpts from his book obtained by Reuters news agency, Mr. Kushner says that White House physician Sean Conley took him aside on the presidential jet on a flight to Texas to tell him that the results of tests in which had been admitted to Walter Reed Medical Center and was shown to have cancer and had added “we need to arrange surgery immediately”.
Mr. Kushner, husband of Ivanka Trumpdaughter of the former president, submitted to surgery before Thanksgiving that year and managed to keep neither his diagnosis nor his treatment from the press, even though at the time leaks to the press were rampant from the American presidency.
The New York Times was the first to reveal the information, citing excerpts from his book.
Although Mr. Kushner was unaware of it, Donald Trump was aware of the diagnosis and the planned surgery. “The day before the surgery, Trump called me into the Oval Office and asked his team to close the door. ‘Are you worried about the operation?’, he asked.
“How do you know that?” he says Mr. Kushner asked him.
“I am the president, I know everything. I understand you want it not to spread. I prefer to keep things like this to myself too. You’ll be fine. Don’t worry about anything at work. We have covered everything”, adds how the then occupant of the White House replied.
Jared Kushner’s book Breaking History: A White House Memoir will be released on August 23rd.
Much of Mr. Kushner’s thyroid was removed in the surgery, which came amid intense negotiations with China over a bilateral trade deal.
Mr. Kushner, 41, was a leading member of the team that negotiated the deal to normalize relations between Israel and Arab states in 2020. He was also credited with President Trump’s failed Middle East plan. He now runs the investment firm Affinity Partners and has stepped out of the political fray, at least for now.
