Wish has now implemented a new interface to prevent inauthentic and misleading discounts advertised by its business partners, as well as to stop using price personalization techniques.
Following a dialogue with the Dutch consumer and market authority (ACM), in close cooperation with the European Commission and the European network of national consumer protection authorities (CPC), international online shopping platform Wish has agreed to increase price transparency , to comply with EU consumer rules. As part of the regular monitoring of the commercial practices of online platforms by EU consumer protection authorities, a number of concerns in relation to EU consumer protection law have been identified.
Concerns have also been raised under the coordinated CPC review or ‘scanning’ of coronavirus-related ads on online platforms in 2020. After starting a dialogue in April 2021, Wish pledged to end misleading practices such as promoting false discounts (for example, not based on a price that was actually charged) and the use of hidden personalized pricing based on the shopper’s behavior and location.
Justice Commissioner Didier Reyders said: “Consumers must be informed in advance of how much they have to pay for a product, including all taxes, such as import duties and other charges, and their choices cannot rely on false price reductions. Price transparency is a key asset for a well-functioning and competitive single market, both for consumers and businesses. We welcome Wish’s change in price transparency practices and look forward to continued efforts to ensure product safety in line with their commitments under the Product Safety Commitment.”
As a result of the partnership, Wish has now implemented a new interface to prevent inauthentic and misleading discounts advertised by its business partners, as well as to stop using price personalization techniques. More information on consumer protection enforcement is available here, as well as in the relevant ACM press release. You can learn more about Wish’s commitments to ensuring product safety on the Wish website Commitment to product safety.
