Opinion – Nelson de Sá: Bloomberg calls for more US and business support for Brazilian democracy

by

The American Bloomberg says in an editorial that “Brazil’s Democracy needs more friends in high positions” (below), given the “possibility of an electoral crisis in the largest country in Latin America”, raised by the “bluster” of Jair Bolsonaro.

“The work of securing elections must be led by Brazilians — not just political leaders, but technocrats, the judiciary, civil society and the media,” the editorial reads. “But these forces need help. The US must reiterate its confidence in democratic institutions and electoral authorities, through visits by senior Biden administration officials and bipartisan parliamentary delegations.”

He argues that “in recent years US credibility has undoubtedly suffered among Latin American citizens” and “giving unequivocal support to democratic forces in Brazil would help limit the damage.”

As for entrepreneurs:

“Corporate leaders can also use their influence. While many are reluctant to enter politics, some financiers have already signed an open letter in defense of democracy. More business coalitions and lobby groups can make clear the economic damage that would be caused by violations of democratic rules.”

He argues that “demonstration would be in the interests of the companies themselves, which have nothing to gain from the dismantling of democracy”.
