The Mega Millions jackpot has grown to $1.28 billion. This is the second largest jackpot in the game’s 25-year history and the third largest jackpot in the US lottery game.
For just $2 a ticket, people may want to gamble, but according to Mega Millions, there’s a 1 in 303 million chance a lucky number will be drawn on Friday night at 11pm EST.
The current jackpot started in April and a few people came forward to win prizes, but no one matched all six numbers in the game.
Only players who receive prizes through an annual pension for 29 years will receive a total of 1.28 billion dollars. Nearly all of the game’s winners will still bring in $742.2 million in prize money as of Friday.
The current Mega Millions jackpot is $1.537 million in 2018. This winning ticket is sold in South Carolina and is the largest lottery prize ever won on a single ticket anywhere in the world.
The largest jackpots won in US lottery games in 2016 were split into winners in California, Florida and Tennessee. The powerball game had a value of 1,586 million dollars.
The Mega Millions jackpot starts at $20 million and grows based on game sales and interest rates. This year, four Mega Millions jackpots were won in California, New York, Minnesota and Tennessee.
Mega Millions tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington and the US Virgin Islands. Half of the proceeds from the sale of each ticket stays in the state where the ticket was sold, with larger prizes and authorities state governments will try to get more money for their purposes.
Earlier this week, fast food chain Raising Canes spread word of mouth after its founder bought a ticket for 50,000 Mega Millions. This is one for each employee of the company.
At the time of the acquisition, the jackpot stood at just $810 million, but the venture was unsuccessful. After the main prizes increased, the owner of the restaurant decided to repurchase the tickets for the staff before the drawing on Friday night.
If Raising Cane’s wins the cash jackpot option, the company’s employees will receive about $13,000, the Washington Post reports.
The six winning numbers will be drawn on Friday at 11:00 pm EST.
