The man who brought a gun to the US Capitol and threatened House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has received the longest sentence among those convicted in the January 6 riots.
Guy Lefitt, the first rebel to be put on trial rather than plea bargain, was sentenced to 87 months (over seven years) in prison on Monday.
“Mr. Refitt’s unwillingness to admit from the outset that his actions were illegal is shameful,” District Court Judge Dabney Friedrich said before the ruling.
“Let me be very clear…without a proper definition of the word ‘patriot,’ Mr. Refitt’s actions around January 6 do not fit that term.” The antithesis of the word.
Friedrich rejected the Justice Department’s request for a “terrorism enhancement” that would further extend Reffitt’s sentence.
Refitt, a recruiter for the right-wing 3% militia, said in a video taken on January 6: Leader) Mitch McConnell too.”
In federal court in Washington on Monday, Reffitt called himself an “idiot” for not “thinking straight” when he joined the MAGA mob.
“Of course I’m angry,” Refitt said. “I really wanted to apologize because I hate what I did. I wanted to apologize very much and accept my responsibility.
It was Lafitte’s son who tipped off the FBI a few weeks after fans of then-President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol building, preventing Congress from confirming Joe Biden’s victory.
The government took testimony from his friends that he had bridles and that he decided to bring weapons because they preferred “a jury of 12 to 6 people.” He presented ample evidence against Reffitt, including the testimony of
In March, a jury in Washington, DC found Refit guilty of five felonies, including carrying and carrying firearms on Capitol grounds and interfering with police.
His son was not in court on Monday.
But Refitt’s wife and two daughters watched from the bedroom as he faced punishment. His youngest daughter, Peyton, told the judge that her family had “turned a blind eye” to his mental health problems and that he was “not a threat” to the family.
“My father’s name was not on all the flags that were on that day. He is not a leader.
The 87-month sentence is two years longer than any other sentence imposed on a Capitol mutineer.
In addition to allowing each defendant to be sentenced before a jury on Jan. 6, Refitt’s verdict will allow hundreds of other defendants awaiting trial to enter plea deals.
