Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew addressed a new appeal to the Turkish government to allow the reopening of the Halki Theological School, “which has made a great contribution to Christianity and culture, the Letters and humanity”, today, Wednesday the beginning of the conference organized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate on “The Synodal Circular of 1920: 100 years of significant influence”.
In the speech for the historical synod circular of 1920 “Towards the ubiquitous Church of Christ”, an axial text, as he characterized it, for the course of the Ecumenical Movement, His Holiness reminded that the members of the subcommittee, who drafted its plan, ie The Metropolitan of Seleucia Germanos, Ioannis Efstratiou, Vassilios Stefanidis, Vassilios Antoniadis and Pantoleon Komninos, belonged to the faculty of the Theological School of Halki.
“This means that the Circular expresses the ‘spirit of Halki’, whose main characteristics were openness to the world and confidence in the power of dialogue. You all know that the Halki School has been closed for five decades and that the Ecumenical Patriarchate can not train its executives according to the ecumenical spirit of the Halkiti School. It is certain that the suspension of the operation of our School also affected the course of the Ecumenical Movement. “The discussion of the 1920 Circular gives us the opportunity to appeal to the honest government of the country to allow the reopening of the School, which has contributed so much to Christianity and culture, the Letters and humanity,” he said. K. Bartholomew.
The Ecumenical Patriarch then spoke at length about the importance and spirit of the Synodal Circular.
The conference, originally scheduled to take place last year to mark the 100th anniversary of its publication, but was postponed due to severe anti-pandemic measures, was attended by hierarchs, clergy and theologians from different Churches, as well as by important organizations of the Ecumenical Movement.
