France: Trains south of Bordeaux suspended due to forest fire

by

According to the Land prefecture, the forest fire is still ongoing, but the situation is described as improving in the last hours.

Train services were suspended on Tuesday south of Bordeaux in southwestern France due to a forest fire that broke out in the afternoon in the Landes department, the French railways body (SNCF) said.

All train services have been suspended “since 15:00 (local time) on the Bordeaux-Adai and Bordeaux-Daux-Tarbes lines” because of the fire near the railway tracks in Lalique, in the southern part of the Land, the statement said SNCF.

Three high-speed trains (TGV), bound for Paris, stopped at Dax station.

According to the Land prefecture, the forest fire is still ongoing, but the situation is described as improving in the last hours. As the press release states, “meals and water were distributed to all travellers” who had been excluded, while the necessary steps were taken to offer them temporary accommodation.

170 firefighters and three aircraft were mobilized to extinguish the fire, which reduced approximately 300 acres of pine trees to ashes. Another fire front (further north) was demarcated yesterday morning, after it destroyed about 3,000 acres of pine forest.
