Residents were told to close their windows as the smoke was suffocating

Acrid black smoke covered the city of Hull in the United Kingdom, as several firefighters were called around 7am today, Wednesday, August 3, to put out a fire at a wind turbine, writes the “Daily Mail”.

Residents were told to close their windows as the smoke was suffocating. The wind turbine – 125 meters high – is located in the northern part of the city, near the Croda chemical production area.

The BBC reported that the fire was now out after parts of it fell to the ground. Sean Casey, who works nearby, said: “We started to evacuate just for safety and that’s when the flames started. We were afraid it might fall. We could see the pieces falling».

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said on Twitter that it had received several calls about the fire.

Almost 120 wind turbines catch fire every year in the UK, according to research from 2014. Researchers claim that of the 200,000 wind turbines worldwide, 117 fires occur annually, far more than the 12 reported by wind farm companies. Each wind turbine costs over £2 million.
