Berlin will have to find some way to save 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas from the beginning of this month to March 2023 to meet Brussels’ target. This is a quantity equal to the annual average consumption of 5 million four-member households.

Because of its high gas consumption, Europe’s largest economy is required to save more than any other EU country, as it will have to save almost a quarter of the total that should be stored in the Old Continent.

The German Minister of Economy Robert Hambeck has assured that Germany is already on track to cut consumption by 14 to 15% compared to 2021. But last week Mr Habeck said Berlin was seeking to cut consumption by a percentage from the minimum ( 15%) which was agreed upon.

The president of the Confederation of German Industries (BDI), Mr Siegfried Rushburmcalled on the government to speed up austerity measures and warned that businesses trying to switch from gas to oil face red tape and delays.

According to Mr. Rushburm, measures such as replacement of power plants which are gas-fired with coal-burning plants.

This is not the speed Germany needs in crisis management“, said the head of the BDI. “Germany is in the midst of the biggest energy crisis since the founding of the Federal Republic. Businesses and consumers must do their part to conserve gas to prevent production disruptions. It is a matter of determination and speed“, argued Mr Rushburm.
