The Coast Guard worked day and night in rough seas to rescue a 62-year-old Frenchman who had been stranded on a capsized yacht for 16 hours.

A lifeguard off the coast of Galicia, in northern Spain, said he survived because he was wearing a special suit used in sailing competitions.

The vessel, named Jeanne Solo Sailor, sent out a radio beacon at 8:23 pm Monday when it was 14 miles from the Sisargas Islands, according to the Coast Guard.

One of three helicopters deployed in response arrived in the area and spotted the capsized boat an hour later, just before sunset.

One of the divers looked for signs of life and the crew led a rescue party to hit the hull wall.

A rescue team, including five divers equipped with a five-tonne balloon, protected the boat from movement during night operations.

After the ship docked, two divers with oxygen cylinders went down to investigate the ship’s wreckage and found the ship’s doors open and the sailors alive.

A diver rescued him, after which he was airlifted to a hospital for evaluation.
