A 12-year-old girl who had been held in Alabama for a week chewed through her restraints and escaped, ultimately leading investigators to two decomposing bodies.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Tallapoosa District Court, Jose Paulino Pascual Reyes, 37, is accused of kidnapping a girl, tying him to her bed and keeping her “intoxicated,” including alcohol.

A driver spotted a 12-year-old girl loitering on a rural road Monday morning and immediately called police, prompting an investigation that led to Pascual Rey’s arrest, according to AL.com.

A team of state, local and federal investigators arrested the suspect after the girl was found, according to Tallapoosa County Sheriff Jimmy Abbett.

“I think he’s a hero,” Abette said, adding, “He’s safe now. We want to keep him.”

According to court records, Pascual-Reese was charged with kidnapping, two counts of murder and two counts of mutilation of corpses. He is being held in the Tallapoosa County Jail.

Investigators searched Pascual Ray’s mobile home not far from where the girl was found and found two decomposing bodies.

The remains were sent to the Alabama Coroner’s Department for identification.

Authorities have not shared any additional information about the bodies or ongoing investigations.

“This is a fluid investigation,” Abbett said. “The situation is changing and we do not want to put the identity of minors at risk.”

Pascual-Reyes faces multiple murder charges in connection to a decomposing body found in a mobile home. There were other people in the house when authorities arrived, but Abbett was unable to provide further details.

He said: “It’s horrible to have a crime scene like this.”
