Three migrants were killed and a total of 11 people were injured when a truck crashed into another vehicle and caught fire in southern Hungary today, police said.
The van, which was carrying 15 migrants, crashed into another vehicle after maneuvering to avoid a police checkpoint and caught fire near the village of Botsa, 122 km south of Budapest, Hungarian police said in a statement posted online.
Two of the migrants in the van were killed on the spot and the third succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Eleven people are hospitalized.
The driver, a Georgian national, was arrested. According to the police, he is allegedly a member of a human trafficking ring.
Some 157,000 migrants have arrived at the Hungarian border since the beginning of 2022, an increase compared to 2021, according to an adviser to President Viktor Orban.
