The deputy head of the research and development unit at Taiwan’s defense ministry was found dead this morning in a hotel room after suffering a heart attack, according to the official Central News Agency.

Ou Yang Li-hsing, deputy head of the military-owned Chung-Shan National Institute of Science and Technology, ended up in a hotel room in southern Taiwan, CNA reported.

Authorities said the 57-year-old man died of a heart attack and that there were no signs of a “break-in” in the hotel room, according to CNA. The official was on a business trip to the southern county of Pingtung, according to the agency. Ou Yang was appointed deputy head of the institute earlier this year to oversee a number of missile-building programs.

Taiwan’s government is trying to increase its missile production in the face of the threat of an invasion by Beijing, which considers the island Chinese territory.

China has been holding intensive military exercises around Taiwan since Thursday in retaliation for a visit to the island earlier this week by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
