No country tolerates secession. Taiwan has been part of China since ancient times and the issue surrounding this island is a legacy of the civil war in China. Although the two sides of the strait are in a situation of political antagonism, at no time has the country’s national sovereignty or territorial integrity been divided.
The practice by Taiwanese officials of seeking US support for their separatist agenda and by some Americans of using Taiwan to contain China challenges the unity and dignity of the Chinese nation. Faced with a question of principle like this, China has no room to give in, and no country will give in under similar circumstances. This has nothing to do with the so-called democracy that Washington has argued for.
No provocation is allowed against the principle of “One China”, according to which there is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of it. The government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government in China.
This is explicitly recognized by UN General Assembly resolution 2758, and 181 countries around the world, including the US, have pledged to recognize and strictly respect the “One China” principle when establishing diplomatic ties with our country.
An arbitrary violation of this principle by some individuals in the US runs counter to the majority consensus of the international community and violates the commitments made by countries; which will only further damage and even break the credibility of the US. This has nothing to do with the so-called custom that Washington has argued.
The basic norms of international relations must be observed. The Taiwan issue is a completely internal Chinese affair. While repeatedly touting an “international order based on rules”, Washington ignores the most basic and relevant one of international law, which is not to interfere in internal affairs, as stipulated in the Charter of the United Nations.
The fact that the US side has done everything to facilitate and even support the Taiwanese separatist forces demonstrates the hypocrisy of inconsistent speech and the arrogance of exceptionalism. Who would suffer more if the world were once again ruled by the law of the jungle, by flouting and abandoning the rule of non-interference? This has to do with the hegemony that Washington has been shamelessly practicing.
The continuing agitation of geopolitical tensions promoted by the US is alarming. In a complex and tumultuous international environment, Nancy Pelosi, in her capacity as Speaker of the US House of Representatives, visited Taiwan on a military plane, breaking her formal commitment not to develop official relations with Taiwan and making the already tense situation in the Taiwan Strait even worse. more complicated, dangerous and unpredictable.
Given this, a firm response from the Chinese side is natural. Washington always follows the same pattern of creating a problem first and then using it to achieve its own goals. But no such attempt to evade responsibility changes the fact who initiated the provocations. This has nothing to do with the so-called overreaction that Washington has argued.
Henry Kissinger, who participated in negotiations to normalize China-US relations 50 years ago, witnessed how the Taiwan issue was properly handled on the basis of the “One China” principle. In his book “On China”, he concludes: “What a great achievement it would be if the US and China could join forces not to shock the world, but to build it!”
More recently, he noted, “The US should not, by subterfuge or a gradual process, develop something like a ‘two Chinas’ solution.” The time has come for Washington to rethink its policy towards China.
