Trapped miners in Mexico: Diver’s unsuccessful attempt to enter flooded tunnel

by

Governor Miguel Riquelme said via Twitter that an army diver entered the mine’s portico number 4 but encountered obstacles and was unable to proceed.

Soldier entered for a few moments in flooded mine shaft in northern Mexico where ten workers have been missing for a week, announced the governor of the state of Coahuila.

AFP journalists on the ground saw the soldier, equipped with an oxygen tank and mask but wearing his uniform — not a diving suit — descend into one of the galleries in a metal basket, before resurfacing minutes later.

Governor Miguel Riquelme said via Twitter that an army diver entered the mine’s portico number 4 but encountered obstacles and was unable to proceed.

The coordinator of Civil Protection Laura Velaskes said earlier that the members of the rescue crews are “ready” to enter the coal mine “at any time”, at a depth of 60 meters, after exploration with an underwater drone.

Hundreds of rescue crew members, among the divers of the armed forces, were mobilized in the operation to locate the missing miners. The relatives’ hopes that they will be found alive fade as time passes.

According to the authorities, the miners were carrying out excavation work when a groundwater well was drilled.

The state of Coahuila, practically the only one where coal is mined in Mexico, has seen a series of fatal mining accidents over the years. The worst occurred on February 19, 2006, when 65 miners were killed in a gas explosion at Pasta de Conchos.
