Salman Rushdie Attack Testimony: ‘He Tried to Escape’

The attack on Salman Rushdie. The 75-year-old author, who has received threats on his life from Iran in the late 1980s over his book The Satanic Verses, was stabbed in the neck at a literary event in New York when an assailant stormed the stage armed with a knife immediately after its appearance. The seriousness of his condition remains unknown so far.

A witness in the audience told the New York Post that Rushdie tried unsuccessfully to run off the stage and began hitting the author.

“While this (the attack) was happening, a lot of people in the audience were screaming ‘she’s stabbing him!'” the witness said. He said the attacker was tall and wearing a black hat and mask.

Rushdie collapsed on the scene after the attack, and witnesses told the Washington Post they saw blood on his hand.

The Indian-origin author was treated at the scene for his injuries before being airlifted to a nearby hospital.

The “Satanic Verses” written by Salman Rushdie caused an uproar in several countries of the Muslim world in 1988, as it was considered a book with “blasphemous” content. In fact, the then supreme religious leader of Iran Ayatollah Khomeini had issued a religious edict calling for Rushdie’s assassination.

The alleged perpetrator has been arrested.

Videos were released on social networks shortly after the attack, as well as photos of the alleged perpetrator.
