Archbishop Elpidophoros expressed his gratitude to God that there were no casualties

“Our elderly brothers and sisters in Istanbul have the right to have a decent place to spend the last years of their lives”, Archbishop of America Elpidophoros said yesterday after the visit he made to the Greek Orthodox Hospital Balukliwhich was affected by the disastrous fire of August 4th.

The Archbishop of America expressed his deep emotion because his grandmother, his uncle Michael and his late father Vasilios spent the last years of their lives in this emblematic institution of Constantinople. “A very beautiful place, as he said, it is now in ashes, but very soon it will be restored to its original form and acquire even greater beauty».

Besides, Archbishop Elpidophoros met with the staff members of the institution who were present when the fire broke out and they hurried to remove the inmates from their rooms and the adjacent buildings so that they would not be in danger. In addition, he also met elderly brothers who were staying in the hospital and were saved, as they said, literally at the last moment before the roof collapsed.

He expressed, in fact, his gratitude to God that there were no human losses and his heartfelt thanks to the diaspora in America, especially to the ladies of the National Philoptochos, the members of the Order of St. Andrew of the Lords of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the USA and to the Centennial Leadership Fund for their prompt response to his call to finance the premier expatriate institution and relieve the aged and sick who resided there.
