A billionaire neighbor who illegally built ‘Britain’s finest man cave’ said he was relieved to be jailed.
Residents of Cinderford, Gloucestershire added that they hoped this was the “beginning of the end” in the fight over accountant Graham Wilden’s sprawling holiday resort.
The 70-year-old grandfather of five was jailed Friday after an eight-year fight over a major expansion that would include a bowling alley, mini-casino, squash courts and a movie theater.
He was said to have been detained for six weeks after Judge German QC ruled that Wildin’s behavior indicated that he was determined not to comply with Dean District Council’s repeated orders at the paddy field.
One of his neighbors said, “I hope this is the beginning of justice, but the neighbors’ problems will not end overnight.
“This is the beginning of the end, but it is far from over.” It was a very stressful time for all of our neighbors, so at least some measures were put in place.
Before Wilden was sentenced, residents said they felt he was “betraying” them because they protested his refusal to follow the rules.
One added: Annoy everyone on the road by breaking planning rules and parking your classic car collection everywhere.
“He has everyone’s back and it’s time for him to return to the streets.
“We don’t see him very often. He used to be part of the community, he used to go to street parties and things like that, so it’s a shame, but now he’s bothering everyone on the road and making us treat badly.” .
“They are giving the house away, I don’t know how they are going to demolish the building now, but I hope they find a way.”
A judge told him he had 18 weeks to comply with the dissolution order when he was released from prison, so Wildin’s six-week sentence doesn’t end the story.
The judge did not accept the contention that the accountant did most of the cleanup work in his cave, but could not pay a worker to complete it nor did he physically do it alone.
Council Vice President Paul Hyatt said:
“In a situation that could have been completely avoided, Mr. Wilden has consistently disregarded existing laws and planning policies to protect the community.
The law is the law, and I will not give up on prosecuting Mr. Wilden, and making sure he follows the law just like everyone else… from behavior like that seen in this case to the community. who ignore planning policy using legal channels to protect”
