Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke by phone today about the safety of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.
The United Nations has the logistical and security capacity to support a visit by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors to Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear power plant if both Russia and Ukraine agree, the secretary-general’s spokesman said today. UN Stefan Duzarich.
“The UN General Secretariat has no jurisdiction to block or cancel any IAEA activity,” Dujarric added.
Dujarric was responding to a Russian accusation that UN security prevented a visit by IAEA inspectors to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, which has been under Russian control since March following its February 24 invasion of Ukraine.
The spokesman said that “in close contact with the IAEA, the UN Secretariat has assessed that Ukraine has the logistical and security capability to support any IAEA mission to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant from Kyiv.”
However, both Russia and Ukraine must agree, the spokesman said. Both countries have said they want a visit by International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors. Its head, Rafael Grossi, has said he is ready to lead a mission and called on Russia and Ukraine to cooperate.
