Officials deployed by Russia in the occupied territories of Ukraine’s Zaporizhia region said today that Ukrainian forces are shelling the town of Enerhodar, home to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest.
According to the Interfax news agency, authorities installed by the Russians in Enerhodar said Ukrainian forces began shelling the city at 3:00 p.m. local time and accused them of doing this to provoke Russia into firing back.
The Ukrainian side did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
Reuters cannot yet confirm information about this latest bombing.
Russian forces seized the area around the Zaporizhia station in March, shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. The station, still operated by Ukrainian personnel, remains close to the front lines and has been hit by shells several times in recent weeks, raising fears of a nuclear disaster.
Ukraine and Russia are blaming each other for the firing in and around the nuclear reactor complex in southern Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned Russian soldiers who direct fire at the station or use it as a base to fire from there that they will be a “special target” for Ukrainian forces.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a demilitarized zone around the nuclear power plant.
