Cyprus: Ecumenical messages of Pope Francis

by

A message of peace and brotherhood of the peoples was sent from the largest stadium in Nicosia by Pope Francis as part of the divine service he performed this morning in front of thousands of believers who gathered at the GSP to see up close the popular leader of the Roman Catholic Church. Thousands of people were on the field, most of them with immigrant biographies, holding the flags of countries such as the Philippines, Lebanon and Argentina.

The messages of love and solidarity sent by the Pope during his visit to Cyprus will culminate at 16:00 in the afternoon, when Pope Francis will offer a universal prayer with refugees and immigrants at the Parish Church of the Holy Cross in Nicosia. This is a move that sends a clear message of the need to support vulnerable populations, both in Cyprus and in Europe. In fact, as President Anastasiadis confirmed yesterday, Pope Francis is expected to grant asylum to at least 50 refugees in Cyprus and take them with him to the Vatican.

It showed the way to peace and dialogue

Yesterday, Pope Francis, speaking from the Presidential Palace, referred to the Cyprus issue, but also to the challenges facing Cyprus and Europe in relation to the refugee crisis. Describing Cyprus as a cultural and religious crossroads, he wished the country to become an open construction site for peace in the Mediterranean, while stressing that the only way to peace and brotherhood is dialogue. Pope Francis will leave Cyprus tomorrow and will visit Greece, where he will stay until December 6th.
