A former nurse has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexually abusing a young woman with a severe disability who became pregnant as a result of her rape and gave birth to a baby boy.

Nathan Sutherland initially denied all charges, but eventually pleaded guilty to sexually abusing the patient for whom he was responsible. He was sentenced by a court in Phoenix, Arizona, to ten years in prison, the maximum sentence that can be imposed for such offenses. He will also be monitored for life and his name will be included in the register of perpetrators of sexual crimes.

Sutherland was arrested in January 2019 as part of an investigation that began when the patient, then 29 years old, gave birth to a baby boy. According to her family, she has severe mental retardation due to seizures she suffered in her childhood.

“She can not speak, but she can move her limbs, head and neck a little, while” she responds to noises and is able to grimace, “the family explained. From the age of 3 the woman was admitted to a special center, Hacienda Healthcare, in Phoenix.

The DNA of the child born by the 29-year-old corresponds to that of Sutherland.

Staff at Sutherland where she worked since 2012 said no one knew the patient was pregnant until the birth began.
