Members of a Panamanian sect who on January 14, 2020 killed six children and a pregnant woman in an “exorcism ceremony” were sentenced to 50 years in prison to “cast out the demon”.
The court imposed a maximum sentence of 50 years in prison on each of the seven accused of the “New Light of God” sect, as announced by the prosecutor’s office.
Two other members of the sect had already been sentenced to 47 years in prison, following an agreement with prosecutors.
According to the ruling of the Changinola court, the members of the sect tied up their victims, including six children aged 1 to 17, and killed them by beating them with sticks, Bibles and machetes, on the pretext that “they were demon from within them “. The victims were members of the indigenous community of Ngabe Bouge d’El Teron.
The pregnant woman was forcibly taken to the church of the sect and she was killed in front of her five children, who were then beaten to death, along with another minor.
Many witnesses of the massacre, injured themselves, escaped and alerted the police. When they arrived, the police found about 15 people tied up inside the place of worship, including many children.
The bodies of the victims were later found, still tied up and decomposed, in a mass grave, an hour’s walk from the church.
