The Republican politician and his closest aide are charged in a federal corruption investigation.
According to the indictment, Cassada and Cade Cothren took advantage of their positions of power by working with another congressman – whose name has not yet been released – to funnel money into their accounts.
To this end, they used a consulting firm which concealed their involvement.
Federal agents arrested both Cassada and Cothren at their homes in the morning.
It is noted that a few months ago another Republican MP, robin smith, abruptly resigned while facing federal charges involving Cassada. Cassada was not named directly in those court documents, but the indictment indicated that more charges will emerge from the corruption investigation.
