UN Secretary-General reiterates deep concern over military operations near Zaporizhia nuclear power plant

Its Secretary General UN denounced today before the Security Council the “senseless” war in Ukraine, exactly six months after Russia’s invasion, a day that is “a sad and tragic milestone”.

“Today is a sad and tragic milestone, six months since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24,” said Antonio Guterresdenouncing the consequences of this “senseless war, far beyond Ukraine.”

He reiterated his “deep concern” about military activities around its nuclear plant Zaporizhia. “Any further escalation of the situation could lead to self-destruction.”

After returning from a visit to Ukraine and Turkey focusing on grain exports from Ukraine that resumed thanks to an international agreement signed in July, the Secretary-General underlined the threat to global food security that persists.

“In 2022 there is enough food in the world — the problem is its uneven distribution. But if we don’t stabilize the grain market in 2022, there simply won’t be enough food in 2023,” he said.

The Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky he is then expected to address the UN Security Council meeting called for by the US, France and Britain to mark the anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, which this year coincides with six months of war.

The Russian ambassador to the UN Vasily Nebenzia opposed this intervention, underlining that it is not opposed in principle to the participation of the Ukrainian leader, but to the fact that he does not have a physical presence. But a vote of the members of the Council (13 votes in favor, one against, one abstention) allowed it.
