Endless queues are formed by citizens in the Chinese city of Chongqing, patiently waiting in sweltering heat to take mandatory tests for the coronavirus.

The city authorities started mass tests in a central part of the city, while the temperature reaches record levels. Millions of residents stand under the hot sun for hours waiting for their turn.

The strict measures introduced to contain the spread of the virus are the latest hardship for residents already suffering from extreme heat, severe drought and forest fires.

Chongqing province reported 40 Covid-19 infections on Wednesday, bringing the total number of cases to 146 since mid-August.

Authorities ordered more than 10 million people in the city’s central urban districts to undergo mandatory Covid tests on Wednesday as temperatures soared to 40 degrees Celsius.

Photos on Chinese social media showed residents forming long queues, with some fainting from the intense heat.

Video released shows a street lined with hundreds of people apparently queuing for Covid tests, most wearing face masks and some fanning the heat.

In the background, smoke from the fires can be seen.
