A “grieving” family has paid tribute to a man who died after the BMW he was riding in crashed into a bridge.

Harry Smith, 33, of Worcester, died at the scene after being pulled from the River Avon.

It was revealed today that he is a devoted father of six with four sons and two daughters.

The accident occurred around 4am on Friday when a silver BMW and a red Vauxhall Astra collided on Eckington Bridge and the BMW plunged into the water.

A 38-year-old Worcester man who made it out of the river has been arrested on charges of causing death by dangerous driving and drug driving.

He was released pending an investigation.

Another man in the Astra suffered minor injuries, police said.

They are trying to establish who was driving the BMW at the time of the accident.

Police, West Midlands Ambulance Service and Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Services were present at the scene.

The bridge is now open with temporary weight and speed restrictions.

Condolences issued by police from Smith’s family said Smith will be missed for being a devoted father, son, nephew, brother and boyfriend.

Her mother Shirley and her partner Jerry said:

“I would like to thank everyone who has shown their respect at this sad time. Harry will convey the message to the King.

“I miss you, my child, I love you, my heart is broken.”

His father, also known as Harry, said: I will love you forever. ‘

Smith’s girlfriend, Sophie, said: I will never love Harry anymore. I miss you. This is not a good bye. Bye.

In a joint statement, his brother added:

“Our hearts are broken and our hearts are empty. We hope you can help us. We will never have a chance to make new memories.”

“We never had the chance to say goodbye, but we will always love you until we find you on the other side, who you left but never forgot.”

His uncles Lenny, Kojak, Eddy and Guegs said, “He wasn’t just a nephew, he was a brother.”

The family has asked everyone to refrain from speculation on social media and to respect their privacy.
