Kremlin: It is “absurd” for Europe to discuss a block on the granting of visas to Russians

This is a proposal of the Baltics and some other countries. France and Germany reject the proposal.

The Kremlin today criticized calls by some European leaders for ban on granting entry visas to Russian tourists, saying the proposals are “absurd” and the latest manifestation of the West’s anti-Russian agenda.

At a meeting in Prague this week, European Union foreign ministers will discuss it proposal of the Baltic countries and some others to stop granting entry visas to the Schengen zone for Russians.

“Step by step, unfortunately, both Brussels and individual European capitals demonstrate a complete lack of logic,” stated the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

He said that Europe’s actions towards Russia “close to insanity”, making it possible for Brussels to move forward with a ban in the future.

“Of course, such decisions cannot go unanswered,” Peskov said without saying how Russia might respond.

Nordic and eastern European countries are strongly backing an outright ban on tourist visas for Russians in response to Moscow’s actions in Ukraine, saying travel to Europe is a privilege, not a right.

But important countries like France and Germany oppose the proposals for limiting visas to Russians, saying such a step would be counterproductive, according to a joint memo seen by Reuters.
