Earlier that day, he died in hospital from injuries sustained in a car accident in a Paris road tunnel.
His partner Dodi Fayed and the driver of the Mercedes-Benz W140 Henri Paul were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Princess Diana Memorial in Hyde Park was opened by Her Majesty the Queen on July 6, 2004.
According to the website, the fountain was built to reflect the life of Princess Diana, with water flowing in two directions from the highest point, cascading, swirling and foaming to meet a stationary pool at the bottom.
