Guatemala and Taiwan signed an agreement to strengthen their bilateral diplomatic cooperation and reaffirmed their mutual support during the Guatemalan foreign minister’s visit to the Asian island, the Central American state’s government announced Thursday.
Taipei and Guatemala signed an agreement on the exchange and training of diplomatic personnel, the foreign ministry said in a press release, days after Mario Bucaro pledged that his government would “always support” Taiwan.
Guatemala is one of only 14 countries in the world to maintain official diplomatic relations with Taiwan, and is also one of its three remaining allies in Central America — the other two being Honduras and Belize.
In December, China re-established diplomatic relations with Nicaragua. Beijing does not hide its intention to reduce the number of states that recognize Taiwan to zero.
The issue has wider geopolitical ramifications. Among other things, the US government is concerned about the fact that China is intensifying efforts to increase its influence in Central America.
Taiwan of 23 million people lives under the constant threat of a military invasion by China. Beijing considers the island a breakaway Chinese province, destined to be reunited with the mainland in the future, by force if necessary.
The announcement of the Guatemalan diplomacy also points out that during their meetings with Mr. Bucaro, heads of Taiwanese companies expressed their intention to import larger quantities of products from the Central American state, especially coffee.
