Its objectives include “strengthening European sovereignty”, in particular its military autonomy, reforming the Schengen agreements, promoting a “climate package” on carbon taxation, and concluding a “peace and friendship agreement”. with Africa “under the auspices of the EU.

The incumbent French Presidency of the European Council, which represents the 27 member states – not the European Commission – will allow Paris to coordinate the dialogue and set the agenda, thus setting its own priorities.

Among other things, a defense summit is planned for the first three months of the French presidency, during which the most important appointments will be made before the presidential election.

Emanuel Macron is still expected to reveal on Thursday the list of cities where various meetings will be held under the French EU presidency, according to his services.

On the same day, his Prime Minister, Jean Castex, will meet with the chairmen of the European Parliament’s parliamentary groups and with its President, David Sassoli.
