Roberta Metsola: Optimism in the EU for the natural gas field of Cyprus

by

The president of the European Parliament describes the recent discoveries of natural gas reserves off Cyprus as important for the EU.

The president of the European Parliament characterizes the news regarding the discoveries of natural gas reserves off Cyprus as promising Roberta Metzola, while as mentioned, the E.E. and especially the European Parliament clearly called on Turkey to immediately reverse its actions in Varossia, as they make the prospect of reaching a solution to the Cyprus problem more difficult.

In an interview published in the newspaper The DAILY of Cyprus and answering questions in writing, Ms. Metsola refers to whether and to what extent natural gas can be a source of cooperation rather than conflict, especially in the current phase.

“The recent discoveries of significant natural gas reserves offshore Cyprus are important for two reasons: First, they hold the promise of increasing natural gas production in the E.U. without dependence on third countries for energy supply. This news is promising at a time when we need to replace Russian energy sources. Secondly, today’s crisis has brought the member states of the European Union even closer – we are developing common solutions for common problems. This means that the discovery of large natural gas deposits in one country is good news for the entire bloc and makes us all stronger. I truly believe that a common approach to energy can bring us even closer and become a catalyst for peace and cooperation rather than a factor causing conflict.”

In view of her visit to Cyprus on September 9 and to a question about its solution CyprusMs. Metsola states that the only option for a sustainable settlement of the Cyprus issue is the continuation of a targeted dialogue based on the agreed framework and the United Nations resolutions: “Turkey must show commitment to maintaining good neighborly relations and stop promoting unacceptable and extreme proposals, such as the one for a two-state solution in Cyprus, contrary to the spirit and letter of the United Nations framework”, he pointed out characteristically.

As for her Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as the sanctions imposed by the European side on the Kremlin, the president of the European Parliament characterizes the reaction of the EU as united and in solidarity. :

“This war began with Putin’s unjustified attack on the sovereign state of Ukraine. So we must not forget who the aggressor is. Although our main priority is the end of war, we must at the same time avoid the fatigue it causes. We must not forget that we are on the right side of history, even if the effort turns out to be long and tiring. Our support helps Ukraine endure and Ukraine is not fighting for anyone, but for its citizens and for us Europeans, our values and our way of life. If the conflict continues, the blame and responsibility rests with Putin alone. The E.U. it was created to ensure peace on the European continent and we will insist on that. Europe will not give in to the blackmail of a dictator.”
