Iran targeted by US sanctions for supplying drones to Russia

The United States will impose a series of sanctions against the Revolutionary Guards and Iranian companies for their involvement in the delivery of armed remote-controlled drones to Russia for use in the war in Ukraine, the US Treasury Department announced Thursday.

The sanctions focus on the Revolutionary Guards, already the target of a series of punitive measures linked to the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program and listed on the State Department’s blacklist of “terrorist organizations”.

“The US is committed to toughening sanctions against both Russia and Iran and holding accountable all those, like Iran, who choose to support Russia in its war of aggression against Ukraine,” Brian Nelson said. undersecretary of the Treasury responsible for counterterrorism and economic intelligence, according to a press release issued in Washington.

Companies involved in the research, development and production of UAVs as well as an Iranian company responsible for supplying them to Russia are also being targeted by the US government.

The sanctions envisaged mainly concern the freezing of the resources and goods that they may possess in the US territory and increase the risk for those international companies that trade with them to become the target of sanctions in turn.

Moscow, at least according to Washington, because of the difficulties it faces in the war in Ukraine and its heavy losses in military hardware, has in recent weeks made large purchases of arms and ammunition from both Iran and North Korea.

Iran, for its part, announced on Monday that it plans to buy Russian Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets through the mouth of Iran’s Air Chief of Staff, Hamid Vahedi.
