As “one of the greatest leaders the world has ever known”, the late Queen Elizabeth was described by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Liz Truss, opening an extraordinary ten-hour session of the House of Commons at noon.
The marathon session, which will continue on Saturday, gives MPs a chance to pay tribute to the monarch of seven decades who died on Thursday in Balmoral.
Ms Truss reiterated that Queen Elizabeth “was the rock on which modern Britain was built”.
He added: “We remember the commitment she made on her 21st birthday to dedicate her life to service. The whole body will agree: never was a promise so completely fulfilled.’
Ms Truss also said Elizabeth “reinvented the monarchy for the modern age and championed freedom and democracy”.
Prime Minister Tras he also welcomed the ascension of Charles III, with whom he will meet later in the afternoon at Buckingham Palace.
As the parliamentary session began, television cameras captured the arrival of King Charles and his queen consort Camilla at Aberdeen Airport to head to London after traveling to Balmoral to be by Queen Elizabeth’s side during the her last moments alive.
The MPs participate in the meeting in black, while at the beginning they observed a minute’s silence. The Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, also announced that the new Queen’s televised address will be shown tonight at 6pm local time.
At the same time as all this, Buckingham Palace confirmed with an announcement that Charles will be officially declared monarch by the Coronation Council at 10am local time on Saturday.
In honor of the new king, flags across the UK will be flown at half-mast for the duration of the “proclamations” of his announcement, before returning to half-mast for the duration of national and royal mourning.
