Death of Queen Elizabeth: The unprecedented baptism of fire for the prime ministership of Liz Truss

48 hours after taking over as Britain’s prime minister, Liz Truss found herself swimming in uncharted waters following the death of Queen Elizabeth II after seven decades on the throne.

Prime Minister Trass met King Charles III this afternoon, a few hours before the new monarch’s first speech was broadcast.

For the first time in its history, Britain changes monarch and prime minister in the same week: an unprecedented baptism of fire for new head of government Liz Truss. Over the years, every British prime minister has had time to prepare for the eventual death of the Queen. Liz Truss missed out, as she was officially appointed by Elizabeth II two days before the Queen’s death.

The last official photos of Queen Elizabeth II are of the meeting she had on Tuesday with Boris Johnson’s successor at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

From the moment she became Prime Minister, Liz Truss knew she would not enjoy a grace period. A few hours before the Queen’s death, she had presented to parliament the plan to relieve households and businesses from increased energy costs. The debate was interrupted at midday when the head of the British government was discreetly handed a note informing her that the Queen’s health had deteriorated rapidly.

Liz Truss was informed of the Queen’s death at around 16:30 (local time – 18:30 Greek time), two hours before it was officially announced by Buckingham Palace.

It was the 15th appointment of a prime minister by Queen Elizabeth II in her 70 years on the throne. The first was from Winston Churchill and the last was from Liz Truss last Tuesday.
