Bloodshed in Congo: Gunmen kill 15 residents and burn 300 houses

The account was confirmed by local officials, who attributed responsibility for the bloody attack to insurgents of the CODECO organization.

Gunmen spread death overnight in a town located in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, local officials announced today.

The attack in the city of Dzugu in the eastern province of Ituri left 15 people dead and hundreds of houses set on fire.

“I had stayed until late at night in my shop and suddenly I heard gunshots,” said a shopkeeper, adding that “so far the toll is 15 dead and more than 300 houses burned”, while he spoke of many wounded and kidnapped.

The account was confirmed by local officials, who attributed responsibility for the bloody attack to insurgents of the CODECO organization.

Last February, at least 60 people were killed in CODECO’s attack on a nearby IDP camp.

A large part of eastern DR Congo has seen a surge in violence this year, causing despair among residents who accuse the army and the UN peacekeeping force (MONUSCO) of not doing enough to protect the population.

One man was killed in Beni city this week by gunfire during an anti-MONUSCO demonstration.
