Ukraine: Russian counterattack in Kharkiv – One dead and many injured

by

The situation at the front is difficult, said the head of the pro-Russian forces

At least one person was killed and six others were wounded, while Russian shelling caused new problems with electricity and water in Kharkiv, Ukraine, officials said, as Ukrainian forces made new advances in the region.

Ukraine’s army general staff said its forces had recaptured more than 20 towns and villages from Russian forces on Sunday, as a Ukrainian counteroffensive in the country’s northeast continued.

A 37-year-old man was killed and six other people were injured, including an 18-year-old girl, by Russian strikes, Kharkiv Governor Oleh Sinekhubov said on Telegram.

“Last night’s situation is repeating itself. Due to the (Russian) strikes (…) the electricity and water supply has stopped”, the mayor of the city, Ihor Terekhov, noted for his part.

A Reuters correspondent reported that power had been restored this afternoon at least in central Kharkiv, but added that loud explosions could be heard a few kilometers away.

Difficult situation on the front

One of the leaders of pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, Denis Pushilin, admitted today that the situation is “difficult” on the front because of the Ukrainian counter-offensive, but assured that Russian forces are “holding up well”.

The statement came after the Ukrainian army announced significant territorial gains in recent days, particularly in the Kharkiv region, but also in southern and eastern Ukraine.

“The situation remains difficult. The enemy is trying to destroy critical political infrastructure,” Pushilin told Russia’s Rossiya 24 TV channel, referring to “massive shelling”.

The head of the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic” also referred to attacks by Ukrainians in the city of Liman. The situation, though “difficult,” remains “under control,” he argued, saying Russian and pro-Russian forces are “advancing in certain zones,” without naming them.

Earlier today, the Russian military announced that it had bombed zones recaptured by Ukrainians near Kharkiv and in the Kupyansk and Izium sectors.
