Two dead and 14 injured from the collapse of the four-story building in Amman- Watch video

The tally given by hospitals reports “the death of two people and the injury of 14 from the collapse of an apartment building in Jabal al-Weibdeh, a district in the center of Amman,” said the spokesman of the public security directorate, Amer al-Shartawi.

Two people died and 14 were injured today when a four-story building collapsed in Amman, Jordanian authorities said.

The tally given by hospitals reports “the death of two people and the injury of 14 from the collapse of an apartment building in Jabal al-Weibdeh, a district in the center of Amman,” said the spokesman of the public security directorate, Amer al-Shartawi.

“Rescue crews who are there are continuing their investigations after they recovered a second body from the wreckage,” Sartawi added in statements he made to an official television network.

The collapse of the building is believed to be mainly due to the fact that it was “old and dilapidated”, Deputy Prime Minister and Local Government Minister Tawfiq Krishan told the same network, adding that authorities were “inspecting the condition of neighboring buildings”.

Accompanied by ministers, Prime Minister Bisher al-Hassauneh went to the site of the accident in Jabal al-Weibdeh, one of the oldest districts of Amman and known mainly for its cultural life.

“The prime minister has instructed the mayor of the capital to conduct an investigation into the causes of the collapse of this building,” said government spokesman Faisal Sbul.
