A package, which exploded after being delivered to Boston Northwestern University this week, contained a memo critical of Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta Platforms, which owns Facebook, CNN reported today.
The memo also denounced the relationship between virtual reality developers and the academic community, according to the American television network citing sources close to law enforcement agencies.
A university worker who grabbed the package after receiving it on Tuesday was injured in the blast and taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries to his hands, Boston police said. One second parcel which was considered suspicious, neutralized.
Police said they are investigating the incident in cooperation with Boston Fire and EMS. Some evening classes were canceled yesterday, Tuesday, but the university will operate as normal today, Northeastern said on its website.
Authorities have not said who may have sent the package or why Northeastern was targeted.
CNN and Boston’s WCVB channel reported that the package it contained a note criticizing Zuckerberg. The company Meta has developed a virtual reality platform, Horizon. The memo’s author warns people against working with VR developers, according to CNN. WCVB reported that the memo was unsigned and generally warned people not to do business with Zuckerberg.
The note was inside a pressure vessel, which exploded when opened.
Meta did not respond to a request for comment on this information.
Police at other Boston universities, including Harvard and MIT, urged people to be extra vigilant and call the authorities if they see a suspicious package.
The city of Boston was rocked in 2013 by the Marathon bombings, which killed three people and injured more than 260. In 2015, a court sentenced to death Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who launched these attacks along with his older brother, who was killed a few days later in a shootout with police.
