The Moscow court decided to dissolve the “Union of Journalists and Media Workers”

The court of the city of Moscow decided to dissolve the independent Union of Journalists and Media Workers, reports the Interfax agency.

The Moscow prosecutor’s office, which requested the dissolution of the Union of Journalists, states in its proposal that “the Union and its regional branches use sources on the Internet, which contain information that is contrary to the law. In this way, the activity of the Union entails a violation of the rights and freedoms of the individual and the citizen, as well as causing damage to public order and social security, to society and the state”.

According to the Union’s lawyer Maxim Krupski, the authorities were primarily disturbed by the Union’s actions in defense of political prisoners and opposition journalists, as well as its support of independent media.

In the last year, writes the Russian service of the BBC, the Union filed several lawsuits against the Moscow municipality for refusing to approve the organization of protest rallies against the “foreign agents” law, released a report on the persecution of the media, organized a campaign in support of politician Alexei Navalny, a campaign to support women journalists who have been victims of violence, has sent a request to investigative authorities following the death of Russian journalist Aksana Baulina in Ukraine.

The Union of Journalists and Media Workers was founded in 2016 after an attack on a bus carrying journalists and human rights activists on the border of Chechnya and Ingushetia. The association had more than 600 members from 40 regions of Russia. He was a member of the International and European Federation of Journalists.

The operation of the Union was suspended in mid-July following the lawsuit filed by the Prosecutor’s Office in the Moscow City Court
