A 45-year-old man was also pulled alive from the wreckage – Three people have been arrested, two of whom were involved in the renovation work carried out on the building

To them the dead amount to eight from the collapse of a four-story building in Amman, Jordan, and rescue crews are racing against time to get those trapped in the rubble alive.

“Rescuers recovered two more bodies this evening, bringing the death toll to eight,” the public safety agency announced.

The previous count was six dead and ten trapped in the ruins of this building, in the Jabal al-Weibdeh district. Almost 24 hours after the tragedy, rescuers managed to retrieve alive a 4-month-old infant and a 45-year-old man.

Because the streets in this district, one of the oldest in Amman, are very narrow, it is not possible for heavy machinery to approach the site and all the debris is removed by hand, under the anxious gaze of the relatives of those trapped.

In the context of the investigation that the prosecution authorities have already started, it was ordered arrest of three personsof which two participated in the renovation work done on the building and the third is the manager of the apartment building, the official Petra agency reported.

King Abdullah, from Paris where he is making an official visit, asked “to continue every possible effort to rescue the trapped”, as announced by the palace.

The area has been cordoned off by police who are preventing residents of the neighborhood from approaching the scene so as not to hinder search and rescue operations.
