NBC: Ukraine’s counterattack caught Moscow by surprise — Russian journalist: ‘We were trapped’

by

“Ukrainian forces forced Russian troops into a disorderly retreat from the northeastern region of Kharkiv after a surprise counter-attack left ‘Kremlin plasterers’ scrambling to adjust”

The balance of war in Ukraine seems to be overturned, comments the American network NBC in the wake of the Ukrainian counterattack that began last Monday in the east of the country.

“In a development that surprised the international public as much as the Kremlin, Ukrainian troops forced Russian President Vladimir Putin into retreat after more than six months of fierce fighting — boosting hopes that Kyiv could pressure and expel the invaders of Moscow from even more lands.”

“The Ukrainian forces forced them Russian soldiers in disorderly retreat from the north-eastern region of Kharkiv, following a surprise counter-attack that left ‘Kremlin’s plasterers’ scrambling to adjust and his army scrambling to consolidate its defenses to the east and south.”

“President Volodymyr Zelensky said Monday that his country’s military had recaptured about 6,000 square kilometers of territory this month, an area about the size of Delaware.
Seeking to strengthen their advantage, Ukrainian forces on Monday continued to push deeper into territory previously controlled by Russian troops. Military analysts say the operation showed the world – and particularly Kiev’s Western allies – that Putin’s forces have been eroded and depleted by months of fierce Ukrainian resistance.

“The significance of the latest developments lies not only in the astonishing advance of Ukrainian forces, but also in the convincing evidence that they can take the initiative and wrest territory from Russia at a rapid pace,” said Keir Giles, a Russia expert and senior adviser at a London think tank. He said the recent events were a “turning point” in the war.

The counterattack represents “a turning point, a clear sign, a defining moment” in the war, observed John Spencer, a retired US Army major.

“Russia’s recent failures are even beginning to rub off on the typically nationalist and warmongering tone of Russian state television, with one commentator appearing to blame Putin’s advisers for leading him to war in the first place. “The people who convinced President Putin that the special operation would be short and effective, that we would not hit the civilian population … these people just they trapped us all”Boris Nadezhdin, a former Russian parliamentarian and political analyst known for his more moderate views, said characteristically.

However, the Kremlin insisted that Putin would not back down.

“The ‘special military operation’ continues and will continue until all the goals that were initially set are achieved,” Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a conference call with reporters.

“If he was smart, he would try to end the war now and negotiate,” Phillips O’Brien, professor of strategic studies at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, said of the Russian president. “But it doesn’t look like he’s going to do that, at least not right away,” he added.
