The government recalled that Britain is “the oldest ally” of Portugal. They signed the oldest alliance between states still in force, based on a treaty of 1386
Portugal declared three days of national mourning, from September 18 to 20, in honor of Queen Elizabeth who died last week, the government announced tonight.
This period of mourning was decided “in honor of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II”, who “marked the second half of the 20th century and the first quarter of the 21st century”, according to a statement released after the meeting ministrial Council.
The government also reminded that Britain is “the oldest ally” of Portugal. Authorities often point out that the two countries signed the oldest alliance between states still in force, based on a 1386 treaty.
Thousands of Britons have been participating since yesterday in the popular pilgrimage of Elizabeth, whose funeral will be held on September 19 in Westminster Abbey in the presence of leaders from all over the world. Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Souza has already confirmed that he will attend the funeral.
