Francis: I wanted to meet Xi Jinping in Kazakhstan but he didn’t have time

by

Xi Jinping was yesterday, Wednesday, in Nur-Sultan for an official visit while Pope Francis participated in the same city in a conference of religious leaders from around the world.

The Vatican signaled to China that Pope Francis was willing to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping while they were both in the Kazakh capital, but Beijing responded that there was not enough time.

The Vatican source cited by Reuters did not say how or when the rapprochement with China, with which the Holy See has been engaged in a “delicate” dialogue over the status of the Roman Catholic Church in that country, was made. The Vatican “expressed its availability” and the Chinese side replied that it “appreciates the gesture”, but there was no free time in Xi’s schedule.

Xi Jinping was yesterday, Wednesday, in Nur-Sultan for an official visit while Pope Francis participated in the same city in a conference of religious leaders from around the world.

A meeting between the two, even for a few minutes, would constitute a historic event.

On Tuesday, when asked by reporters accompanying him on the flight to Kazakhstan if there was a chance he would meet with Xi, Francis replied that he “doesn’t have any information about that.” When asked if he plans to go to China, he replied: “I am always ready to go to China.”
